Volunteers needed for 55+ Games

Apr 3, 2024 | 10:21 AM

The search is underway for volunteers to help out with the 2024 Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association’s 55+ Provincial Games, this time in the Battlefords.

“We’re looking in the neighborhood of 150 volunteers and I think the key point is they can be of any age,” said Doug Fehr, co-chair of the Human Resources Committee.

The games will take place from June 11 to 13 and Fehr said they are looking for volunteers to fill multiple roles across all games and disciplines and they can come from communities outside the host community.

“There will be officials roles in which the volunteer will need to know the intricacies of the event,” he said.

The events include track and field, pickleball, golf, lawn bowling, five-pin bowling, pool, swimming, slow-pitch, cribbage, kaiser, short story writing, poetry and photography.

Judges, timers, office staff, starters will all be required to make this year’s games a successful one.

“Their mandate is to – or not just a mandate – but their reason for being is to promote both physical and mental fitness,” Fehr said of the SSFA.

The games take place every two years and the last time it was held in the area was in 2016. Once again, competitors from all over the province will descend on the Battlefords.

“We anticipate 600 people, so we need a system to register the athletes, make sure they get to the right venues on time,” he said.

The co-chair explained the point of the games is friendly competition and noted it’s also a social event and full of spirit.

For those interested in signing up for a volunteer position, they may visit the SSFA website. There will also be an open house at Northland Power Curling Centre, (623 Carlton Trail #2) on Wednesday, April 17 from 10 a.m., to 8 p.m.
