City crews get ready for pothole repairs this spring

As drivers grumble about bumps and heaves in the roads this spring, the City of North Battleford workers are getting out to start their annual pothole repair work.

“Our roadway crews are working to ensure that our roads are safe for everyone, and performing pothole patching where they can,” said Director of Operations Stewart Schafer in a statement. “I want to remind drivers to slow down and obey all traffic barriers. The barriers are in place to keep the public and our workers safe.”

According to the city, potholes form through the thaw and freeze cycle of spring.

People are asked to drive with caution when traveling through standing water, since many potholes are hidden under melt-water and can cause damage to vehicles.

Drivers need to also slow down to avoid splashing pedestrians, or otherwise potentially face a fine of $100.

The city notes potholes can also pose a serious driving hazard.

Potholes occur when moisture enters spaces in the pavement, freezes and then expands. The expansion then puts pressure on the surrounding pavement, causing it to deteriorate. During this season, that cycle is repeated every day, causing more, larger potholes.

The City of North Battleford is asking the public to report any potholes through the city’s service request site available online so they can be fixed promptly.
