Over 12K boxes of KD to topple over at Field House Thursday

When Dan Fox, school liaison with Living Sky School Division first conceived of the “fun, little project” to help the Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre, he never foresaw where the cheesy goodness would take them. Now, the communities have over 12,000 reasons to get excited about KD.

“It’s kind of morphed into this very large, very community driven, very publicly supported endeavour, now that’s going to be a monumental task to take on but one that myself and build team are really looking forward to at this point,” he said.

Since the initiative began, local schools, businesses and community members have donated just shy of 7,000 boxes of mac and cheese. Kraft Heinz Canada has also stepped into the creamy mix by matching the original goal with an additional 5,500 boxes.

“We blew past our milestone,” he said of their goal and noted he wasn’t surprised by the community’s response.

“I’m humbled by it, I’m grateful for it, I’m excited by it, I’m a little intimidated by it.”

The attempt to break the Guiness World Record for most Mac and Cheese being toppled over will commence on Thurs., Mar. 28 at about 1:30 p.m., at the Nationswest Field House, located at 623 Carlton Trail Unit 3. According to Erin Katerynych, executive director of the food bank, everyone is thrilled.

“I am not surprised by the generosity from the community. In my opinion, The Battlefords is a caring community, they’re always ready to step up and help whenever they’re needed,” she said.

Due to the limited timeframe, the task is daunting, but the excitement is palpable and come event day, it is expected a representative from Guinness will be there to monitor and watch the proceedings. The set up will also be a traditional domino set up as Fox explained that because of the number of boxes, time limits and the fact that his team is made up of 10 and 11-year-olds played a role in his decision.

“It’s likely to be much more linear, let’s say than decretive,” he said.

According to Katerynych, they have 6,800 boxes currently stored at the food bank. The other 5,500 boxes have yet to be picked up from Discovery CO-OP and that is scheduled to take place this Wednesday. Come Topple Day, all the boxes will be ready for Fox and his team to set up.

“I’m super excited,” she said.

To get ready for the day, Fox and his team aren’t leaving anything to chance. They’ve been practicing by learning to build curves, lines and they’re getting faster.

“The kids are quite surprised, like in 15 minutes, they can build a 300-box build right, or a 500-box build depending on how elaborate it is,” he said.

Now it’s all about the Great KD Domino Topple.

“Right now, at this point they’re uber-psyched,” said Fox.

“Let’s see if they’re still at that level of excitement three hours in but right now, they’re really psyched and they’re really stoked.”
