U11 Battlefords Sharks win SFHL championship

Mar 21, 2024 | 1:04 PM

The U11 Battlefords Sharks are coming off a season for the ages, proving themselves at the top of the food chain in the Sask Female Hockey League (SFHL).

After clinching first place in the league standings with a remarkable 19-0-1 record in the regular season, to take 39 of a possible 40 points on the year, the team advanced to the playoffs in Swift Current as the top seed overall.

The Sharks picked up right where they left off at the tournament, winning three more games to advance to the A-Final, including a thrilling last-second victory in their first game against the West Prairie Mohawks which saw forward Olivia Mann score the game-winner with just 0.04 seconds to go in regulation.

In the A-Final against the Weyburn Gold Wings, the Sharks were tested again in a tight one-goal contest into the third period, before pulling away in the final frame, to take a 4-2 win to be crowned not only West Division Champions but SFHL U11 A Champions.

“It was a great season, we had a good group of girls that came together as a team and were very dedicated,” Head coach of the U11s, Bryce Bohun said. “Their parents [were great at] getting the girls to games and practices all the time, it was a very dedicated group, and then coaches as well, same thing. We were committed to seeing these girls excel and improve as the year went on and it was just a great year overall.”

With their success this season, the U11 Sharks became the first Battlefords Sharks team in history to win their league at any level. The U11s were recognized for their accomplishments pregame Wednesday, ahead of Game 1 of the U18 AA Sharks’ provincial finals series with the Regina Rebels.
