Red Pheasant expects to open new retail plaza this summer

Red Pheasant Cree Nation hopes to open its new retail plaza on its urban reserve in North Battleford this summer.

The 17-unit mall, called Eagles Landing, will be at 15th Avenue and Territorial Drive.

“The strip mall itself will be completed mid-summer,” said AJ Ahenakew, director of economic development for Red Pheasant. “June 15th is our hopeful date.”

Construction on the project first started last October, following the sod-turning ceremony.

“It’s been a good fall. Because of that warm weather we had through the fall and December, we were able to do a lot of work that normally wouldn’t get done,” Ahenakew said. “We had a really good season for construction. We had a little bit of a rough time there in January, but it was an extraordinary year for construction.”

Ahenakew believes the project will be a welcome addition to the Battlefords, offering more shopping opportunities for the area.

North Battleford City Council looked at the Red Pheasant project at this week’s meeting as it was reviewing the city’s building permits report.

James Johansen, Director of Engineering, Planning, Asset Management and Infrastructure, said for January the city issued one building permit for a new commercial building for the Red Pheasant project, for a value of $5,512,500.

“It’s making us look a lot better for the year,” he said. “We’re happy it’s going.”

Johansen added that construction on the project “is proceeding nicely.”

Mayor David Gillan was also pleased to see the project coming along.

“It’s really great that they are investing in this strip mall in the city,” the mayor said. “Hopefully, they have lots of tenants for their property.”
