Battlefords-Meadow Lake area digging out after winter storm

While the North West area including the Battlefords and Meadow Lake continues to dig its way out after the weekend’s snow storm, weather conditions will be dropping overnight to a low of minus 30 C.

Between 30 to 40 cm of snow pummelled the area by Sunday afternoon, with some areas even receiving a little over 40 cm.

Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Jesse Wagar said the parts hardest hit were the areas between Saskatoon and North Battleford.

“It was a pretty significant winter storm, with a lot of snow falling through the area there,” she said.

Wagar noted weather in the Battlefords and Meadow Lake area is expected to stay quite chilly for most of the week.

“We do have a little bit of lingering snow just to the east now,” she said Monday. “That is clearing throughout the day today for most areas around Saskatchewan. It looks like a pretty cool week. Cold air has really settled over Saskatchewan, but there is a warm up coming by the end of the weekend, so there is some hope on the horizon there.”

Wagar added the warming trend should then stay for the next little while. Some snow is expected early next week, but it isn’t predicted to be significant.

Temperatures are running at around minus 30 or minus 32, even without the windchill, Monday in the Battlefords and Meadow Lake area.

“With the north-westernly winds, it’s pretty cold out there,” Wagar said. “Overnight it is getting ever colder. It could be closer to minus 40 with the windchill tonight. [There’s] a couple of pretty cold days, then we really flip the switch through the weekend into the warmer temperatures.”

Thursday is when the area will see a little bit of a gradual warm-up.

“I would be prepared for a pretty cold week this week, with overnight lows quite cold, in that minus 30 range, with windchills in the minus 35 and minus 40 range,” Wagar said. “Then Friday, Saturday and Sunday you’ll get your warmer air move in.”
