Winter storm closes highways to the Battlefords

Mar 3, 2024 | 7:54 AM

All roads lead to nowhere for the residents of the Battlefords.

The Highway Hotline has issued a report which shows nothing but red on the map and everything has shut down. The area had been under a winter storm warning for days and Saturday it descended upon northwest Saskatchewan with all the force Mother Nature can muster.

According to the latest report from Environment Canada, the area is expected between 25 to 40 cm and current conditions as observed from the North Battleford Airport, wind is gusting to near 60 km/h and visibility is 0.6 km at the time of this writing.

The system from Montana has caused surfaces including roadways and walking areas to become near impassable as snow continue to build and blow. It is recommended all non-essential travel be cancelled until weather improves and residents gather safety gear such as water, flashlights, food and warm clothing together.

Meanwhile, The City of North Battleford has closed all recreation facilities for Sunday as a result of the storm.

This includes the Don Ross Arena, The Access Communications Centre, Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre, NationsWEST Firld House, Allen Sapp Gallery, Chapel Gallery, and the Don Ross Community Centre.

Road crews are still working at clearing Priority 1 roads but the large amount of snow is contributing to a slower than normal process.
