Town of St. Walburg hopes for infrastructure funding for upgrade projects

The Town of St. Walburg has a number of projects planned ahead, and is hopeful it will receive government support to help them move forward.

“We are looking forward to seeing those government grants coming out for the infrastructure,” Mayor Nancy Schneider told battlefordsNOW. “We have aging roads infrastructure.”

She said the town has set aside dollars to utilize for the work, when it receives some grant funding.

The mayor noted there is often a shared cost, through the province and federal governments, with the town covering a portion as well.

“We want to make sure we can maximize those government dollars to get the best bang for our buck,” Schneider said. “We are really looking forward to having those grants [come in]… We are waiting for the new round to come out.”

The town has set aside $100,000 for its projects, as it waits for government funding announcements in the spring.

“We’re watching to see what the provincial and federal government will have for that funding,” Schneider said. “Nothing has been announced, but spring is coming, and we’ve got our fingers crossed.”

Some projects the town would like to see move ahead include improving a couple of the key roads.The town’s five-year plan is to upgrade five important roads that see significant traffic in the town and through it.

“Those will be the ones we’ll be working on,” Schneider said. “We’ll do as much as we can.”

The project will also include Underground Pipe and Asphalt Replacement (UPAR) work, as well as road surface paving.

Tourism boost

One project in the works involves the town’s tourism committee. The town plans to create a tourism information spot or tourism centre-point, that vehicles can pull into off the highway, when they are first coming into town.

“It is going to have a map of the town, as well as [a list of some interesting] things to do in the [St. Walburg] area,” Schneider said. “It’s just being developed by the tourism committee, but the actual pull-out [stop-off point] has been built. It’s so people [will] know what’s in town, and also what’s happening around. We’ve got some beautiful lakes around us.”

The mayor described the project is a work in progress.

“We’re pretty excited to see that this spring,” Schneider said. “It’s right off Highway 26, coming in from the south to St. Walburg.”
