Battlefords gets a wintery February blast

Feb 26, 2024 | 11:44 AM

Another blast of Old Man Winter has taken over the Battlefords just as a reminder that it’s still only February.

Over 10 cm of snow fell in the area overnight wreaking havoc and sending cleanup crews into overdrive. In a statement from the City of North Battleford, the area is still under a storm warning. Residents are reminded to avoid travel if possible as road crews are out clearing the streets according to the priority sections – the last of which are the residential streets.

According to the Living Sky School Division’s website, as of this morning, all buses are running in the Battlefords, but nearby communities Cut Knife, Unity, Hafford, Cando, Leoville, Medstead and Macklin, have been cancelled.

Meanwhile in Battleford, they will commence their clean-up once the snow has stopped as outlined in their snow removal bylaw.

“It is dangerous to initiate a snow clearing program during a storm when visibilities are reduced. It is also ineffective to clear streets that are passable until it stops snowing, as the traffic, additional snow accumulation and winds tend to nullify any efforts made,” the bylaw states.
