North Stars drop second straight, fall 4-1 in Melville

The Battlefords North Stars dropped their second straight, with a 4-1 loss in Melville Saturday, to fall to 0-2 through the opening two games of their final road trip of the season.

Melville forward Jadon Iyogun scored his first career SJHL hat trick to lead the Mills to victory, while Kole Keen added his eighth, and goaltender William Dyke stopped 29-of-30 North Stars’ shots to backstop his team to the win.

Josh Medernach scored the lone goal for the North Stars, cashing in for his seventh of the year to tie the game early in the first, after Iyogun’s first of the night opened the scoring on the first shot of the game just 36 seconds in.

A 2-1 Melville lead at the end of the first, and 3-1 advantage at the end of two periods, the 4-1 goal capped the night in the third, serving as Iyogun’s third of the game, into the empty net.

Matthew MacArthur made 27 saves on 30 shots to keep the North Stars in the game for much of the night, with two of his three goals allowed coming off at least partial breakaways allowed by the team.

With the loss, the North Stars are now 33-12-4 through 49 games. With a Humboldt win over La Ronge in other action around the league, the Battlefords now sit just two points up on Humboldt, and three ahead of Melfort for second overall in the league standings, with just seven games remaining on the regular season schedule.

The North Stars return to action Sunday afternoon for a quick turnaround for the final game of their three-game road trip, at Notre Dame. An afternoon start, the NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Broadcast will be available on 1050 CJNB with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 4 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 4:30 p.m.
