Izyk nets pair but North Stars fall short in Yorkton

Feb 24, 2024 | 12:02 AM

It was a tough start to the night that snowballed quickly into a runaway score, as the Battlefords North Stars fell 8-3 to the Yorkton Terriers Friday, at Yorkton’s Westland Arena.

A 1-0 game just 2:32 into the first on a shorthanded goal by Terriers’ forward Cooper Alajer, Anthony Domina added his 16th and Dustin Renas his sixth in quick succession, to give the home-side a 3-0 lead just 6:03 into the night, on their first four shots on goal.

A 4-1 Yorkton lead at the end of the first, and 6-1 advantage at the end of the second, the teams traded a pair each in the third to make it an 8-3 final.

Alex Izyk scored two of the North Stars’ three goals on the night, wiring home his 16th of the season in the first, and his 17th in the third on a power play, to move into a tie with Estevan’s Felix Allard for most amongst defenceman. His 52 points in 44 games trail only Flin Flon’s Noah Houle (60 points in 45 games) for most at the position.

Terriers’ goalie Ethan Farrow stopped 31-of-33 North Stars’ shots on the night to backstop his team to the win. North Stars’ puck-stopper Logan Cunningham allowed eight goals on 31 shots, though many of the goals came on odd-man rush chances and back-door tap-ins in tight.

With the loss, the North Stars are now 33-11-4 on the season through 47 games. Still second overall in the league standings, the team will get a chance to rebound quickly as they return to action for the second night of their three-game trip, Saturday in Melville.

Saturday’s NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Broadcast will be available on 1050 CJNB, with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 6:30 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 7 p.m.
