P.A. non-profit holding national essay contest on raw materials

Feb 9, 2024 | 8:00 AM

A non-profit in Prince Albert is holding a national essay competition on the raw materials found in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Manitoba.

The Canadian Centre for Raw Materials Display Inc. (CaCeRMDI) is hoping to see people between the ages of 15 and 18 take part and help them promote all the resources the three provinces have to offer.

Leo Ekhaguere, the president and founder of CaCeRMDI, told paNOW the competition isn’t about listing all the materials but highlighting what they’re used for.

“(Youth) do not know the raw materials used in making those final products that we all use. In schools, they are taught natural resources, but I bet when they get out of the classroom they forget most of those things.”

An example of a raw material not being truly understood is crude oil. It’s used to help create clothing, lipstick, soap, and more.

“You must know what we have first before knowing what can be done of it,” added Ekhaguere.

Essays will be accepted until March 29, 2024.

Afterwards, the top seven will be chosen to take part in a final quiz on all raw materials in the three provinces. The top score will be given the top prize of $500, while the second would receive $300, and the third $200. Ekhaguere explained these prizes may increase, depending on if they can get any other organizations to partner with them.

Those who don’t podium would still be recognized.

“All the seven will be referred to as CaCeRMDI young persons of the year,” said Ekhaguere.

The top seven will be announced on April 8, 2024, at the Prince Albert Public Library.

Those interested in writing an essay are asked to email it in either a PDF file or Word document to cacermdi@gmail.com along with their name, age, and contact information.
