North Stars bounce back for 4-1 win at Notre Dame

Feb 9, 2024 | 11:38 PM

The Battlefords North Stars got back in the win column Friday night in Wilcox, taking home a 4-1 victory over the Notre Dame Hounds at the Duncan McNeil Arena.

North Stars’ forward Ben Portner scored a goal and an assist to extend his point streak to 10 straight, while Rylan Williams and Brayden Sinclair added a goal each in the second, and Evan Waldie put the game away in the third on a penalty shot.

Logan Cunningham was rock solid stopping 34 of 35 Hounds’ shots in the win, while Notre Dame’s Spencer Boros also made some big saves early to keep his team in the game through much of the night.

After Hounds’ forward, DJ Freigang opened the scoring midway through the first, Portner’s 24th of the year tied the score on a one-timer set up by Alex Izyk. Portner’s first of two points on the night, with the performance he becomes just the fourth player to hit the 60-point mark in the SJHL this season.

A 1-1 game into the second, Williams’ 15th came on a rebound in tight to make it 2-1 Stars on the eventual game winner, coming just a day after celebrating his 19th birthday.

Sinclair’s 14th then made it 3-1 North Stars on a power play strike midway through the middle frame, to add an extra insurance marker.

In the third, Waldie’s third of the season then capped the night on a penalty shot, thwarting the goalie one-on-one for the 4-1 marker, which is where the score would remain.

With the win, the North Stars are now 32-9-3-1 on the season through 45 games. With just 11 games to go on the regular season schedule, the team will now get a full week off before returning to action next Friday and Saturday for a back-to-back in Flin Flon.

The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Broadcast will be available both nights next weekend on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7 p.m. with puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
