Say ‘I do’ to BASAC’s Mock Wedding February 23

“Ding dong, the bells are going to chime” …sort of.

The Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre (BASAC) wants residents of the Battlefords to dig through their closets, cabinets and even trunks to find their wedding attire – all for an evening of fantastical feasting and dancing.

“I love wearing my wedding dress, I still wear it,” said Amber Stewart, BASAC executive director.

The upcoming Mock Wedding event has its origins in a pre-COVID event called Recycled Wedding that included a wedding cake cutting ceremony, a dance and yes – even a bride and groom. As this is the first time they’ve held the event since before the pandemic, the organizers decided to re-brand.

“It’s just a wedding dance, but of course all of the proceeds go directly to BASAC and the things that we do in the community and for our organization,” she said.

The event is for anyone aged 19 and over – be they single or coupled – and will be held on February 23 at 7 p.m., at the Battlefords Wildlife Federation, located at 9710 Thatcher Avenue. Guests don’t have to wear wedding attire if they choose not to and there are only 125 tickets available so they urge people not to wait as they won’t be sold at the door.

“Maybe it’s your anniversary and you want to come celebrate or whatever the case and when you arrive, you can enter to win to be the bride and groom,” Stewart said, noting people can enter to win as a single as well.

The executive director said based on how many donations they receive, along with the bride and groom, there will be a bridal party too.

“We’re going to have a bouquet toss, we’re going to have a cake, we’re going to have a midnight lunch, a DJ and just a dance and it’s just…a fun night, get everyone out, have a good time and raise money for BASAC,” she said.

Since there are so few tickets being sold, the organizers are encouraging people not to wait to pick them up as the dance is expected to be exciting.

“We can expect to hear a polka or two I’m sure, we can expect the Chicken Dance that you see at a wedding,” he said.

Tickets are $40 and can be purchased via the BASAC website or on their Facebook event page.
