CJHL Trade Deadline

North Stars bolster lineup with active deadline day

It has been a busy last 24 hours for the Battlefords North Stars, who found themselves as active participants in the middle of a frantic trade deadline day across the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) Wednesday.

The North Stars traded forwards Marshall Light and Andrew Casellato in separate deals – moving Light to the Virden Oil Capitals of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) in exchange for the rights to Dean Gorchynska and a player development fee; and Casellato to the Olds Grizzlies of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) for a player development fee.

The moves made room for a pair of acquisitions by the team, in forwards Treycen Wuttunee and Elijah Anderson.

Wuttunee, a Battleford/Red Pheasant hometown standout, returns to the Battlefords to finish out the season on loan from the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League (WHL) with whom he’s played 41 games over the last two seasons as a 16 and 17-year-old.

Anderson, a 19-year-old forward from Calgary, AB., was acquired from the Weyburn Red Wings, in exchange for the SJHL rights to goalie Justin Maric (who remains with Portland of the WHL), a player development fee, and future considerations. Anderson had 21 points, seven goals, and 14 assists, in 24 games this season with the Red Wings, before the trade.

Klimosko said both Anderson and Wuttunee provide the team with some additional offensive spark and tenacity.

“Both bring a little bit of offense, they have a little bit of jam to their game, and they think the game right and will be able to generate some offense for us,” he added. “You never can have enough offense, so adding those too should add some depth in those areas.”

Klimosko thanked Light and Castellato for their contributions to the team this year and said the moves also served as a way to give both a fresh start and a chance to play meaningful minutes with their new teams.

“They’ve earned that right to be able to play, and the one thing you don’t want is for them just to [sit here], so I think it’s a good opportunity for both of them, they’re excited for their new opportunities and they’re just really good kids that we wanted to make sure we did right for them.”

In addition to the North Stars’ four moves deadline day Wednesday, the team also shored up their goaltending position in the days leading up to the CJHL deadline.

A full list of transactions from across the SJHL Wednesday can be found here.

The North Stars will return to action Saturday for their first game of the New Year on home ice, when the Notre Dame Hounds come to town. Klimosko said it remains to be seen if one or both of Anderson and Wuttunee will be in the lineup to make their debut.

Saturday’s NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Broadcast will be available on 1050 CJNB with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 7 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
