Tisdale ready for the 2024 Viterra Scotties next week

Curling enthusiasts from across the province will converge on the town of Tisdale next week as the 2024 Viterra Scotties Provincials curling championships get underway at the RECPlex Jan.17-21st.

Defending champion Robyn Silvernagle of the Twin Rivers Curling Club in North Battleford will be back to defend the provincial title she captured last year in Estevan.

She will be joined by veteran Sherry Anderson who represents the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon (champion 2018, 2004, 2002) along with two-time provincial champions Penny Barker of Moose Jaw,(champion 2022,2017) Michelle Englot of Regina (champion 2012, 2008) and Kronau’s Amber Holland (champion 2011, 2010).

Tisdale Mayor Al Jellicoe said he’s excited about the event. “It’s great to have an event like the provincial Scotties come to our city,” Jellicoe said. “The whole community is looking forward to the week and of course, it will also provide an economic spin-off for Tisdale as well.”

This marks the fifth time the Scotties has taken place in Tisdale since 1971 with the most recent in 2014 when Stefanie Lawton captured the title.

Jellicoe added that those coming to Tisdale for the Viterra Scotties will not only be treated to a great week of curling but will also enjoy that famous Tisdale hospitality.

“The organizing committee and the community have again done a top-notch job for this event,” he explained. “Aside from having the best curlers from across the province in town competing we will have a beer garden, luncheons and many great events planned for the entire five days.”

Rounding out the group of twelve include Martensville’s Nancy Martin, Mandy Selzer of Balgonie, Brooklyn Stevenson and Jana Tisdale both representing Highland Curling Club (Regina), Sklar Ackerman and Jessica Mitchell representing Nutana Curling Club as well as Moose Jaw’s Sherrilee Orsted.

The twelve qualified teams will compete in round-robin play featuring two pools of six squads with a four-team page-playoff format.

The winner will represent Saskatchewan at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Feb. 16 – 25 in Calgary.
