City awards purchase of new ice plant chiller for arena

Jan 10, 2024 | 12:48 PM

The City of North Battleford updated council on purchasing a replacement ice plant chiller for the Access Communications Centre at this week’s meeting.

Last month, council authorized the city manager to approve awarding the ammonia ice plant chiller replacement project up to the budgeted amount of $125,000, as included in the city’s 2024 budget.

The new chiller is required for ice plant operations.

City administration awarded the ice plant ammonia chiller contract to Canadian Climate Refrigeration and HVAC, which offered the “most comprehensive and lowest-priced quotation” of the three tenders submitted, Fleet and Maintenance Manager Seton Winterholt said in his report. The total cost came in at $108,941 ($6,166 PST Included), below budget.

Winterholt noted this one-time approval was authorized to ensure the successful proponent could order components for the replacement to be completed in the off season.

“It was a little under budget, but it was in the ballpark that could be expected. We had to do it as soon as it came in so we could guarantee that it would be here at the right time, so we could put it in without it interfering with hockey,” City Manager Randy Patrick said. “That was the main [goal]. Council gave me authority to approve that particular project. We were just reporting back to council that it was done because that is what we said we would do.”

The work for the project is scheduled to be completed for the arena between May and July 2024.

“That kind of work has to be done when there is no ice,” Mayor David Gillan noted.
