Town of Wilkie looks for candidates to fill councillor position

Jan 2, 2024 | 4:00 PM

The Town of Wilkie has put a call-out for potential candidates to run for the open councillor seat.

Returning Officer Connor Piller, the town’s acting administrator, is encouraging people to put their names in.

“Participation is what keeps the community moving,” he told battlefordsNOW. “We need people to participate.”

The town currently has five councillors and a mayor on council, which meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month.

Potential candidates have until Wednesday at 4 p.m. to submit their nominations at the Town of Wilkie Office at 206 Second Avenue West.

As part of the process, applicants also need to have completed a criminal record check.

“If anybody is looking to be on the ballot, the more time they allot to getting everything ready the better,” Piller said.

He noted currently the town has not received any nominations for the seat left vacant following former councillor Lucas Jaindl’s departure in October 2023. Jaindl left his post for personal reasons.

Piller said if the town receives some nominations for the position, it will hold a byelection on Jan. 24.

Since 2024 is a municipal election year, if the town doesn’t receive any nominations, the seat will remain vacant until the next council elections in November.
