Winner of 2 Grand in Your Hand contest heading to Scotland

Dec 20, 2023 | 9:00 AM

In an exciting ending reminiscent of the famed storytelling found among the lochs and crags of the Scottish Highlands, the winner of the 2 Grand in Your Hand contest is a North Battleford teacher. Say, could that lass be Rhonda Head?

“This is amazing, and I just am so shocked and what a wonderful Christmas gift,” she said, following the emotional win.

Head explained they the family was supposed to go to Scotland last summer, but due to her father’s health concerns, they delayed the trip. Now they have reason to celebrate.

“My dad actually just found out last week that he’s cancer-free,” she said.

“My mother-in-law has never met my son because of COVID and so we kind of delayed it because my dad was going through Chemo and radiation treatment.”

Hundreds of people submitted their names for the second-annual radio contest that was made possible with the help of local business sponsors.

According to Program Director Nic Fransoo, the giveaway was a chance to help people out over the Christmas season.

“We started this up last year and once again, we came together as three different radio stations deciding to kinda say ‘Hey, let’s give everybody the opportunity to win a nice big prize,’” he said.

Of the hundreds that submitted to 1050 CJNB, Q98 and 93.3 Beach Radio, the luck of the draw brought nearly 30 finalists out to Montana’s BBQ and Bar in North Battleford where through a process of elimination, 1050 CJNB Radio Host Grant Schutte whittled it down to Head.

The event had a jovial spirit and was crowded with finalists enjoying food and drink, each hoping for a chance to be the one to take the prize. In the end, however, it was a family that just overcame personal adversity to come out on top.

Meanwhile, Head said the money will go towards help pay for the tickets and once “Over the Sea” will reconnect with their family next summer and plan to go on a tour of Edinburgh and the Isle of Skye.

“I’m just super excited and I can’t wait to phone my parents right away to tell them we’re going to Scotland.”
