55+ Provincial Games coming to Battlefords in 2024

The Saskatchewan Senior Fitness Association (SSFA) has announced the Battlefords as the host community for the Provincial 55+ Games, coming in the spring of 2024.

Taking place June 11-13 of next year, in a release about the announcement, SSFA Provincial Games President, Margaret Gailing alluded to the success of the event its last time in the community, just under a decade ago.

“The last time the Battlefords hosted the games was in 2016 and they were a success,” she said. “These games not only support and promote active and healthy lifestyles, but also provide a framework that focuses on social, physical, and intellectual opportunities regardless of age or ability, whether as a participant or volunteer.”

The curling portion will begin ahead of the rest of the games, taking place at North Battleford’s Northland Power Curling Centre March 4-6, setting the stage for the rest of the Games in June. This ensures the local curling venue doesn’t have to remake the ice mid-spring.

In addition to a wide range of sports from track and field to swimming, golf, and pickleball, the Games will also feature a number of activities that promote mental and social well-being, including cribbage, kaiser, poetry, and photography.

Mayor of North Battleford, David Gillian said it’s an event the community is looking forward to hosting once again.

“Hosting the Battlefords’ Senior Fitness Games offers a great recreational opportunity for seniors,” Gillan said. “Holding events of this nature provides tremendous economic and social benefits and can only serve to benefit the region as a whole.”

Vice-Chair of the SSFA and Host Committee Chair, Al Gabert, said approximately 600 senior athletes are expected to take part in the Battlefords’ Games.

The SSFA’s announcement release calls the 2024 SSFA 55+ Provincial Games “a celebration of active aging,” with a “diverse range of activities that aim to create an inclusive and engaging atmosphere for seniors to showcase their talents and connect with like-minded individuals.”
