North Battleford Fire Department’s safety tips for a holly, jolly Christmas

Dec 8, 2023 | 6:00 AM

As the silver bells twinkle a merry jingle and boughs of holly deck the halls, the time has come to spread cheer and not potentially tragic news.

“It’s very easy to forget a few simple safety rules when everyone is so busy, or out and about visiting friends and family,” said Paul Perry, North Battleford Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief.

To help keep Christmas merry and bright this season, the fire department is asking residents to remember some safety tips to ensure a holly, jolly Christmas.

1: If you’re a renter, be sure to check whether you’re allowed to have a real tree. If not, artificial trees should be flame-retardant.

2: Real trees must be at minimum one metre away from electrical and heating sources and be sure the tree doesn’t have any dry and brittle branches or needles as they can ignite quickly.

3: Be sure to water real trees every day.

4: Have a tall tree or a tree topper? Make sure to give it space from the ceiling and don’t forget to check the light strands as damaged strands and lights can be a fire hazard.

5: Avoid pugging lights directly into outlets. It’s best to use a “power bar with a built in-breaker.”

6. Unplug the lights at night as they can overheat.
