Unlocked car doors an opportunity for Christmas theft

Dec 5, 2023 | 8:00 AM

The countdown to Christmas is on and for many Battlefords area residents the hustle and bustle of the holidays can be somewhat overwhelming.

During the rush to get last minute details completed such as shopping, baking, and presents to wrap and deliver; we somehow overlook a few basic safety rules over the Christmas period that unfortunately turn this joyous season into a Blue Christmas.

Const. Josh Trefry of the Battleford RCMP said it only takes a heartbeat for theft to occur so everyone needs to be vigilant.

“Many times we are in a hurry going store to store; we get in and out of our car at multiple stops and sometimes we forget to lock our car doors,” Trefry said. “It’s a crime of opportunity; if a thief walks by an unlocked vehicle with a seat or trunk full of presents or groceries, there’s a good chance a theft will occur.”

Trefry said there are many steps residents can take to keep thieves at bay.

“The one piece of advice I’d like to give this holiday season to shoppers, is out of sight, out of mind,” he added. “If thieves can’t see it in your home or in your car then they are more likely to move on.”

This type of theft is referred to as car shopping; thieves travel vehicle to vehicle checking doors to see if they are locked and once inside look for valuables to steal.

“Thieves are not just looking for Christmas presents and toys but they will steal loose change, sunglasses, radar detectors or sound systems,” he added. “Anything they can easily reach in and grab quickly is what they are looking for.”

He suggests that you cover packages, groceries and other parcels with a blanket or a tonneau cover and always take that extra second to lock your doors.

Trefry also warned those who will be leaving the Battlefords over Christmas to make sure your house and garage are securely locked and keep your curtains drawn.

He advised travellers can ask a neighbour to pick up mail and keep the driveway clear of snow, making thieves think the owner is home.

Trefry also noted once all the gifts have been unwrapped, we should avoid putting empty appliance or electronics boxes and packages out for everyone to see.

“If a thief drives by your home and sees all these boxes that your new washer and dryer set or a new 75-inch plasma TV came in, it might just be enough temptation for the perpetrator to want to return when the house is empty.”

Trefry again reminded everyone that these few simple but effective steps can help you and your family have a crime-free and happy holiday season.
