Lights of Joy spread through Battleford Nov. 18

Get into the spirit of the season with the Battleford Community Spirit Group’s annual Lights of Joy celebration.

The fun will kick off at 6 p.m. on Sat., Nov. 18 in the Gazebo Park across from the post office when all the trees, gazebo and wreathes will be lit up.

“Historically the weather has been really nasty for us so we decided to change it up a little bit,” said Group Member Judy Pruden.

After hitting the switch, people are invited to join in a free dance at the Alex Dillabough Centre.

“We ask that you get tickets ahead of time,” said Pruden, who is also a town councillor.

The tickets are available at Battleford Furniture, Remedy’s RX, Battleford and Home Hardware until Saturday or at the Battleford Town Hall – until Friday. People are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the Battlefords Food Bank.

There will also be a special guest making an appearance to see if the residents have been naughty or nice.

“I’m not sure how he’s going to get here without any snow,” she said.

The dance will have a DJ to keep the place hopping from 6 until 10 p.m., the 2nd North Battleford Scouts will be at hand to keep everyone fed with a cash-only canteen, and there will be door prizes and fun activities for participants of all ages.

The evening will end with a grand prize draw for a stay at the Comfort Inn and Suites for one lucky family.

Meanwhile, there are three trees still available for sponsorship.

“If somebody wants to sponsor a tree, it’s $200 then their name goes on a ‘Thank-you’ banner in the park and is up for two years,” Pruden said, adding this event is their only fundraiser for the year.

The group hopes the event will bring young and old out for a celebratory experience along with a communal one.

“It’s a way for people to get out and be with community and not have to worry about reaching in their pocketbook for a pile of money to come,” she said.

To sponsor one of the remaining trees, visit Battleford Community Spirit on Facebook or call Pruden at 306-441-0873.
