North Stars top Weyburn for fifth straight in shootout thriller
Sixty-five minutes of regulation and overtime wasn’t enough to determine a winner Saturday, in a thrilling 4-3 North Stars’ shootout win over the Weyburn Red Wings in North Battleford.
A 2-0 lead for the Battlefords just 14 minutes into the first period, on goals by Rylan Williams and Hunter Burgeson, Weyburn would get one back late in the opening frame from captain Max Monette on the power play to make it a 2-1 game at the first intermission.
In the second, after Wings’ forward Liam Fitzgerald knotted the score 2-2 early in the frame, Riley Girod added his seventh of the year to re-establish the Battlefords’ lead at 3-2, heading into the third period.
Monette’s second of the game was then the lone goal of the third, to again tie the score, sending the contest to overtime.
