New crosswalk installed on 110 Street to keep kids & parents safe

Families crossing 110th Street to access the Battlefords Early Years Family Resource Centre (FRC) will now do so a little safer.

Crews installed a new lighted crosswalk on the road on Friday, so people can park at the lot on the west side, and then cross the busy intersection with ease to access the facility on the east side.

The $8,000 cost of the project was covered by the Battlefords Early Childhood Intervention Program (BECIP), with the City of North Battleford partnering by providing the installation work.

BECIP Executive Director Colleen Sabraw said there is such minimal parking in front of the building, that the crosswalk will just give everyone an opportunity to park nearby and access the centre safely.

Kailyn Tyndall, coordinator with the FRC, said she is excited to see the crosswalk now installed.

“That’s one thing with the parking and the little ones crossing the street with their mums. Sometimes mums are carrying that car seat and holding the hand of the toddler. So [for people] not having to walk to the very end of the road to get across to our centre, to be able to just park and get across safely with these lights, I couldn’t be happier.”

The province provides just under $400,000 a year in funding for the FRC operations.

Battlefords MLA Jeremy Cockrill, who currently serves as Minister of Education, previously served as Minister of Highways. He said the Battlefords Early Years Family Resource Centre, for children up to age five, provides a great service to the community.

“It’s really a special spot for families with kids, and a great opportunity to meet with other parents, and have your child interact, explore, develop and grow,” he said.

Cockrill added a crosswalk was needed outside the centre, so he is thrilled to see it finally become a reality.
