North Stars fall 4-1 in Melfort

Oct 18, 2023 | 11:38 PM

The Battlefords North Stars fell 4-1 in Melfort Wednesday, to snap their two-game winning streak, in a Mustangs’ victory led by their goaltender James Venne who stopped 29/30 North Stars’ shots to backstop his team to victory.

Zac Somers made it 1-0 Melfort just under six minutes into the first period, scoring his second of the year on a deflection in the mid-slot, in his return to the lineup after missing the last four due to injury.

Following a scoreless second, Hayden Prosofsky then made it 2-0 for the home-side on his first in the SJHL and first of two on the night, followed by a Mathieu Pigeon marker to stretch the lead to 3-0 Melfort just passed the midway mark of the third.

Prosofsky’s second of the game came on a breakaway out of the box to catch a pass in stride, breaking in alone on the goaltender and making no mistake for the 4-0 tally.

The North Stars did get on the board late, in the final 30 seconds of play thanks to a Tanner Gold power play goal in his 100th career SJHL game to make it 4-1, though that is all the offense the Battlefords could muster on the night.

In goal, Joey Hawco made a number of strong saves to keep his team within a single goal through 40 minutes, on his way to stopping 27/31 on the night.

With the defeat, the North Stars are now back at .500 with a 5-5-0 record through their first 10 games to open the season. The team will now get a night off to rest and regroup before returning to play this weekend for a home-and-home with the Humboldt Broncos, Friday and Saturday.

Friday’s game in North Battleford will be available on 1050 CJNB with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 7 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m. on the NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Broadcast.
