Men charged after dangerous person alert make first court appearances

Oct 16, 2023 | 12:00 PM

The two men charged and arrested after a dangerous person alert was issued last week at Montreal Lake Cree Nation, made their first court appearances Monday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

Justice Bird and Deon Smith face a number of charges including aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. Both were remanded to appear again on Tuesday.

With respect to the person injured last week, RCMP have only confirmed they were taken to hospital and were listed in stable condition.

According to information heard in court on Monday, the victim was in fact shot.

The dangerous person alert which lasted for several hours, was in response to a report RCMP received that multiple suspects were seen armed and walking around the community.

Local residents were told to seek shelter and to lock their doors. Local administration offices and the school remained closed on Friday.

One of the suspects, Deon Smith, was located the same day and Bird was arrested on Friday morning.
