New housing units open to support low income families

Some area residents of North Battleford now have improved access to affordable housing, thanks to investments from both the federal and provincial governments.

Education Minister and The Battlefords MLA Jeremy Cockrill, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Gene Makowsky, joined representatives from the City of North Battleford and Battleford Housing Authority to officially welcome tenants into the newly renovated 10-family duplex buildings on 101st St.

The opening marks the completion of renovations to 18 three-bedroom and two, four-bedroom semi-detached units.

Amber Stewart, board chair with the Battleford Housing Authority told battlefordsNOW that the three-year wait for this project to be completed was worth it.

“The duplexes that were renovated (101st St) were built in the 1960’s and were the very first properties set up for social housing in North Battleford,” Stewart said. “They were in desperate need of repair and now three years later the project is complete, and we have twenty happy families.”

Stewart added that the fact that these dwellings have been retrofitted to family units was a priority with this project.

“The fact that these units are designed for families is huge because the need here in North Battleford is great,” she stated. “We have a few more projects that we are looking at right now but without strong partnerships, projects like these would not be able to happen.”

Stewart also acknowledged the work of LVSchell Construction of North Battleford who completed the project on time and on budget.

Funding of $3.2 million was provided for the project through the National Housing Strategy (NHS) – Canada Community Housing Initiative (CCHI).

An additional $3.2 million in CCHI funding was provided by Saskatchewan Housing Corporation through a Canada Community Housing Initiative to further rejuvenate existing social affordable housing units across the province. Renovations of 370 existing family and senior affordable housing units across Saskatchewan are anticipated to be completed by December 2023.
