YWCA Prince Albert getting support from province for Stepping Stones Shelter

Prince Albert is getting support from the Saskatchewan government to help fight the homelessness crisis.

The province announced on Friday they were allocating over $40 million over the next two years for 155 new supportive housing spaces, 120 new permanent emergency shelter spaces, and 30 new complex needs emergency shelter spaces in multiple different cities.

It’s not currently known how many spaces Prince Albert is set to receive but the YWCA Prince Albert told paNOW they would be part of the Stepping Stones Shelter.

“We look forward to working with (the province) this winter to provide those beds,” said Donna Brooks, the CEO of YWCA Prince Albert.

The shelter will again be at the Exhibition Grounds. Brooks explained it will most likely open its doors to the homeless population on Nov. 1.

“It may be open sooner, but it depends on staffing. Recruitment is hard right now,” she said.

YWCA Prince Albert and the City of Prince Albert are still trying to get a permanent shelter in place. Last month, Mayor Greg Dionne said a location had been found, but provincial funding was still being discussed.

Meanwhile, Saskatoon, Regina, and Moose Jaw are also set to benefit from this latest provincial announcement.
