BOOK WEEK

North Battleford author sharing his passion during Saskatchewan Book Week

Oct 6, 2023 | 1:00 PM

A North Battleford author will once again give back to local readers in an event to wrap up Saskatchewan Book Week.

Born in North Battleford, Miguel Fenrich is a Sudanese-Canadian authour, photographer, and former journalist. He also owns the fiction publishing company, Supernova Press, for which he received a QEII Platinum Jubilee Medal.

On Friday night, Fenrich will be hosting a reading of his latest novel, What Lies in the Valley. The novel tells the story of a German immigrant and her family coming to Canada after fleeing a number of unfortunate events including the death of her grandparents and kidnapping of her brother.

This will be the second straight year Fenrich takes part in North Battleford’s Book Week celebrations and told battlefordsNOW he’s always grateful to represent his community.

“It’s great to be able to bring some of my writings to share with some of the residents here,” he said. “I’m always dedicated to telling important stories. That’s what’s happening here and there’s no better place than here in the Battlefords.”

This event and others across the province are made possible by SaskBooks, the trade association for publishers, including several independent and small companies like SuperNova Press.

“Book Week is a provincial celebration of novels, books, publishing companies in the province. I’m very excited to be a part of the event this year as I was last year.”

Fenrich noted that Saskatchewan houses a great diversity of writers as well as visual artists, photographers and other creative minds.

He added that publishers, particularly smaller ones, are often not given the recognition they deserve.

“To get to broadcast that and be able to celebrate publishers as well who do so much for to get these books out into the world and being read by people is phenomenal.”

The event featuring Fenrich is at the North Battleford Public Library starting at 6 p.m. Friday.
