SaskTel has announced that 5G cell service has been expanded to include several new communities and rural areas.

Highway 3 west of Prince Albert and Highway 102 north of La Ronge are included in the expanded service areas along with communities like Hague, Humbolt, Lanigan, Tisdale and Wynyard.

“We recognize the true potential of 5G and are tirelessly working to bring this new and powerful technology to our customers across the province,” said Charlene Gavel, SaskTel President and CEO in a news release. “With this latest expansion, we are thrilled that more of our customers across the province will now be able to connect to each other and the world faster than ever before.”

The upgrades were added to more than 40 cell sites and SaskTel said its 5G network has data speeds of up to 1.2 gigabytes/second and will get faster with time.

The company added that in the future, massive network capacity and ultra-low latency will make it possible to accommodate new wireless technology.

“Our government recognizes how important advanced communication networks and technologies have become to the success of our people and province as a whole,” said Dustin Duncan, Minister Responsible for SaskTel.

“The significant investments being made by SaskTel in 5G and fibre technologies will help strengthen the networks we rely on and ensure Saskatchewan remains one of the most well-connected regions in the country.”

The 5G technology will help connectivity across Saskatchewan, particularly in rural areas which means things like remote health care, online learning, agriculture and transportation will benefit.
