North Stars answer back with 9-6 win in Yorkton

Sep 30, 2023 | 1:09 AM

It was another wild night of goals, and goals, and goals in night two of the Battlefords North Stars’ back-to-backs with the Yorkton Terriers, Friday.

Coming off an 8-4 loss to the Terriers Thursday evening, the Stars bounced back to respond quickly with a 9-6 win of their own in the rematch, at Westland Arena.

Eight different North Stars chipped in with at least a single goal on the night, as defenseman Xavier Lacoste scored the first two of his SJHL career, Ben Portner added his first in a three-point night (one goal, two assists), and Brayden Sinclair also registered a goal and two helpers to lead the way for the team.

Marshall Light and Jackson Allan also cashed in for their second in as many games, while Brad Blake, Ashtyn Shields, and rookie Rylan Williams converted for their first of the season, and in Williams’ case, his first in the SJHL.

After falling down 2-0 just 4:23 into the first period, the North Stars would battle back to end the first tied 3-3, on power play goals from Portner and Blake, separated by Light’s second of the season off a rebound conversion in front.

In the second, Lacoste’s pair sandwiched between a nice solo rush by Sinclair for his second of the year, to give the Stars a 6-3 lead after 40 minutes.

In the third, Yorkton scored two straight from Cade Kennedy early and Aiden Knutson midway through the frame to get back in the game trailing 6-5, though that is as close as the team would come.

Shields’ first of the season re-established the Stars’ insurance marker at 7-5, followed by Allan’s second in as many nights on a gorgeous solo rush, to make it 8-5.

After Terriers’ captain Clay Sleeva’s first of the campaign came with Yorkton pushing late, Williams’ milestone goal iced the victory for the North Stars, into the empty Terriers’ net to solidify the 9-6 win.

Stars’ goalie, Cedric Cyr-Dauphinais started the game, stopping six of nine Terriers’ shots before being replaced by Joey Hawco. Hawco stopped 15/18 in relief. Yorkton’s Caleb Allen was in goal for eight of nine North Stars goals, going 24/32 on the night.

The North Stars will now return to action Saturday night to wrap their three-games in three-nights road swing, against the Millionaires in Melville. The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Broadcast with be available on 1050 CJNB, with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 6:30 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 7 p.m.
