Winter Is Coming

Meadow Lake looking to improve snow clearing on downtown sidewalks this winter

Sep 29, 2023 | 5:00 PM

Snow may be the last thing on many people’s minds, but that’s not the case for the City of Meadow Lake.

A tender has been sent out as the city is looking for a business to look after clearing sidewalks and back alleys in the downtown core over the winter.

Mayor Merlin Seymour told meadowlakeNOW property owners are required to clear their own sidewalks, but some areas are still left alone.

“There are a lot of businesses downtown that keep their sidewalks clear, but then you get to an open lot or a place where snow piles up, so who’s responsible for that? We’re trying to figure things out.”

Despite the city looking to hire a business to look after the sidewalks, businesses are still being asked to do their part.

Seymour explained this project will look to replace the skid steer they currently use to try and create clear paths for people to walk on.

“Unfortunately, with a sweeper, you can’t get right tight to the building, it leaves a ridge, and some people with walkers and wheelchairs can’t access the sidewalks.”

Along with moving the snow, the business would be required to properly de-ice the areas to limit people’s risk of slipping and injuring themselves.

Interested companies have until Oct. 4 to submit a bid which includes the overall cost. The contract would start on Oct. 31, 2023, weather permitting, and end on May 1, 2024.

Seymour added the City plans on funding the project through the 2024 budget. Talks are set to start on Oct. 14, 2023.
