Special teams woes continue in Stars’ 8-4 loss in Yorkton

Sep 28, 2023 | 11:49 PM

For the second straight game, special teams play proved to be the Achilles’ heel for the Battlefords North Stars, as the team fell 8-4 in Yorkton, Thursday.

Just a game after allowing four power play goals against in Kinderlsey, the Stars allowed another three to the Terriers – and still one more shorthanded – to fall to 1-2-0 this season.

On a positive note, the North Stars did see four different goal scorers pitch in once again on the night, to give them 11 different goal scorers through their first three games.

Matthew Biros scored his first career SJHL goal, while returning forwards Jackson Allan, Marshall Light and Kobie Anderson also added their first of the new season, and goalie Joey Hawco stopped 25/33 shots on the night.

Yorkton’s Dylan Ruptash and Tate Schofer each registered a pair of goals to lead the way for the Terriers (now 2-0-1), while centerman Clay Sleeva and defenceman Quintin Unreiner added three assists apiece, and goalie Blake Sittler stopped 24/28.

A 1-0 Terriers lead just 52 seconds into the game – and five seconds into their first power play of the night – the Stars’ deficit was 3-1 at the end of the first, and 5-2 through 40 minutes.

Rather than roll over however, the Battlefords did come out with their best hockey of the night to start the third period, when good offensive zone pressure leading to Light’s tally 1:20 into the final frame. However, at 5-3 that is as close as the Stars would get, with the home-side outscoring them 3-1 over the remainder of the third to take the 8-4 final.

The North Stars will now rest up and regroup ahead of a quick turnaround, as the team will get another crack at the Terriers Friday night. Friday’s game will be available on 93.3 Beach Radio with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 6:30 p.m. and puck drop at 7 p.m. on the NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast.
