Head coach, Martin Smith re-joins the local AA program behind the bench this year, having last coached the team back when they were known as the ‘Battlefords Barons’ from 2009-2010.

Joined by former teammates from his time with the Battlefords North Stars, Jody Reiter and Myles Gibb who will serve as assistant coaches with the team, Smith said he’s looking forward to working with the U15s once again.

“I’m excited to be back as head coach and working with young hockey players that have aspirations of moving on to the next level,” Smith said. “My goal is to develop them and get them ready to take that next step in their hockey career.”

With just six returnees from last year’s roster, in goaltenders Hunter Kramer and Parker Schmidt, defenceman Easton Bauer, and forwards Dawson Gamble, Logan Gibb, and Finn Silver, Smith said the veterans will play an important role in leading the young team.

“We’re going to rely on them a lot and their veteran leadership,” Smith said. “They know what it takes to compete and to win at this level, and goaltending has to be key for us.”

“[On the blue line] Easton is very offensive, very mobile and is an excellent defenseman that leads by example, and [up front] Dawson Gamble is a very offensive and talented forward so we’re looking for big things from him, as well as Logan and Finn […] it’s going to be a season where I think we’re going to surprise some people.”

The Northwest Stars will hit the road for a pair of pre-season games this weekend at a tournament in Kindersley, before the start of the regular season next month. The team will then open their regular season schedule on Oct. 1 on home ice at the ACC against Humboldt. Puck drop will be at 6:30 p.m.
