North Stars’ Season Kickoff BBQ to unveil roster for 2023-24

The Battlefords North Stars will be holding a season kickoff BBQ Saturday (Sept. 16), to celebrate the upcoming start of the 2023-24 hockey schedule.

Taking place at Beaver Lions Stadium, the ballpark located right next to the ACC in North Battleford, the event will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and include burger/hot dog and drink combos for $5.

At 1 p.m., the team roster will be announced. Those in attendance will have a chance to meet this year’s North Stars and get their first look at the team.

Kennedy Schmidt, marketing manager with the Stars, said the change from the usual pancake breakfast kickoff to the Saturday barbeque is all about expanding to make it a more family-fun event.

“We decided we wanted to do something a little bit more young kids and family oriented,” Schmidt said. “Having breakfast at 7 a.m. isn’t the easiest thing to get your kids up for to come meet the team, but a barbeque from 11-1 p.m. in the afternoon is the perfect thing.”

In addition to the food, there will also be a number of games set up for the kids, including favorites from the team’s 50^th Anniversary Weekend such as milk bottle bowling, bouncy castles, and more.

“The kids can play games and get little knickknack prizes and, of course, people can get their burger or hotdog and meet the team,” Schmidt said, adding that there will also be a chance for fans and team supporters to pick up or purchase their season tickets for the year.

Following Saturday’s roster announcement, the North Stars will wrap up the weekend with their final pre-season game Sunday afternoon at La Ronge, with puck drop at 3 p.m.

The Stars will open their regular season schedule on home ice, against Kindersley on Sept. 22.
