JPII senior girls open season with gold in Wilkie

The John Paul II Collegiate senior girls volleyball team wasted no time getting off on the right foot this season, with a gold medal win opening weekend in Wilkie.

The Crusaders’ seniors won all four of their games through pool play, before adding another two straight in the playoff rounds, defeating their rivals from Unity and the hosts from Wilkie’s Mclurg High School, the latter of which in straight-set victories by a 25-15 and 25-12 margin to finish atop the podium.

Head coach Quinn Baynham, who along with assistant coach Bryce Craig are in their first year with the team, said it was great to see the players come together quickly and embrace some different looks early on in the season.

“It was a good learning weekend for both us [the coaches,] and the players,” she said. “We mixed up the players and had them playing in different positions just to kind of see who fit where, who worked well together, and all the girls got to play which was really good for all of them. By the end we were really playing hard, having fun, and things were working out nicely.”

This year’s senior girls team features just two Grade 12 players, though despite being younger in age, they have no shortage of experience with majority having already played multiple years with the local club program.

“The girls are so knowledgeable, and they work so well as a team, so that really helps [with the early success],” Baynham said. “Even though they’re young they’re a very experienced team.”

The senior girls will return to action this weekend when the team holds their home tournament at the high school. The Crusaders will open their tournament Friday during school hours against NBCHS.
