North Stars billet meeting, AGM headlines busy week

Aug 21, 2023 | 5:36 PM

With the start of the 2023-24 hockey season just around the corner, the Battlefords North Stars are holding a Billet Informational Meeting tonight (Mon., Aug. 21) at 7 p.m. at the Raptor Lounge (up the main stairs) at the Access Communications Centre.

President and billet coordinator with the Stars, Kyle Kellgren said it’s a chance to find out about all of what it means to billet for the team and ask any questions.

“It’s an information night, as we’re still in the process of trying to find a few more and we have some new perspective billets coming just to hear about what it takes to become a billet, what’s involved, and kind of the ‘ins and outs’ of what a year would look like being a billet for the North Stars,” he said.

“It’s open to anyone, and if anyone has any questions about what it takes to be a billet, they’re welcome to come and we’d love to talk to everybody.”

After having as many as four or five local players from the Battlefords on the roster at a given time last year, Kellgren said the team is looking for a few more billets after seeing those such as Jake Southgate and Zane Florence, who were both 20-year-olds last season, graduate out of the Junior hockey ranks.

“This year’s a little different than the last few years as we had [a few more] kids that lived at home so we didn’t quite need as many billets, and now this year we may need a few more, but it’s such a rewarding experience,” he said. “These players become part of the family and life-long friends, so it’s something people really relish doing and we’re just trying to build up our base a little bit and get the year started.”

The public are also invited to attend the North Stars’ Annual General Meeting tomorrow night (Aug. 22) at the Gold Eagle Lodge in North Battleford.

“We’re just going to talk about the year we had, the financial year the North Stars took part in, and it’s one of those years where just everything went right, so we’re sitting in a sound position right now,” Kellgren said. “To hear more about the North Stars, what we do, and how we operate, people can come out for that too, we’d love to see as many people as possible.”
