North Battleford residents feel the chill with record-breaking overnight low temperatures

Aug 21, 2023 | 11:00 AM

It wasn’t the weekend that many in North Battleford expected weather-wise as overnight lows came dangerously close to the freezing mark.

According to Environment Canada, the overnight low on Aug. 20 reached 0.7 degrees, making it the lowest temperature on record for that date.

Meteorologist Terri Lang spoke to battlefordsNOW about the temperature, saying it does happen occasionally in August.

“The nights are getting longer so there’s more chance for the Earth to cool and get these temperatures,” she said.

She explained the reason for the 0.7-degree mark was a combination of a cold front that moved through the area and the fact the skies were clear.

Thankfully, those temperatures are not expected to return anytime soon.

“We have some rain incoming which we haven’t seen for a while. This is associated with the remnants of Hurricane Hilary. Behind that, it will dry out and we will be back to warmer temperatures.”

The weekend forecast is calling for highs of 26 degrees on Saturday and 28 on Sunday.
