Stars’ signing Biros a boom to Battlefords offense

Aug 8, 2023 | 5:42 PM

The Battlefords North Stars have added some offensive spark from the wing position ahead of the 2023-24 hockey season, with the signing of 18-year-old forward, Matthew Biros.

At 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, Biros is a winger capable of lining up at either side of centre, though holding a preference for his strong side as a lefty on the left wing.

“I’m a pretty offensive guy, I like skating with the puck and rushing it into the offensive zone,” Biros said of his own game. “I’m a pretty good playmaker but from time to time I can put the puck into the net too.”

The Coquitlam, BC., product joins the Stars coming off his first season of Junior A play with the Cowichan Valley Capitals of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) last season. There, he scored six points (one goal, five assists) in 37 games as an under-ager, with the majority of his offense coming down the back half of the year, as he got acclimated to the junior level.

It was an experience he believes will only help him heading into the fall.

“It took me a couple of weeks to get used to because it’s a lot different than [U18] playing against older guys and a faster game speed with more skill, but by the end of the season I started getting more points and gaining a lot more confidence in myself, so I feel like it helped me a ton to get ready for this season,” he said.

While he’s never been to Saskatchewan prior, Biros said the North Stars first caught his eye last year during their run to the National final at the Centennial Cup.

“I saw Battlefords playing really well last year, going on to nationals and coming second at the Centennial Cup, so when I got reached out to by [head coach and general manager] Brayden [Klimosko], I saw the opportunity and I jumped on it,” he said. “I decided to come play for the Stars and their program I’m happy to be a part of now.”

Head scout with the North Stars, Wylie Riendeau said Biros is a player the team has had on their radar for the last couple of years, going back to his final season of U18 AAA with the Vancouver North East Chiefs in ’21-22. That year he scored 24 points (eight goals, 16 assists) in 36 games, before adding another three assists in five games at the Telus Cup, as a 16-year-old.

“I think Matthew is a guy we’re going to rely on heavily for some offense heading into next season, and especially with him having a year of junior under his belt already,” Riendeau said. “Hopefully he’s able to make an impact right away, we know he’s got some skill and he can really skate, so hopefully he’s able to come in and provide some offense for us.”
