Meadow Lake’s Gorst wins big at Poundmaker

Aug 8, 2023 | 2:27 PM

Meadow Lake’s Logan Gorst picked up his first win of the 2023 Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) season over the weekend, finishing atop the leaderboard at the end of five days of frantic fast-paced chucks action at Poundmaker Cree Nation, Aug. 2-6.

Gost paced all drivers with a show aggregate time of 5:00.45, including the fastest time opening day (1:16.31), and the second-fastest time on day two (1:15.53) and day four (1:13.58), finishing no lower than top five each day, showing remarkable consistency on his way to the top of the podium.

“I don’t know what it is but my horses really like that Poundmaker track,” Gorst said reflecting on his win following the weekend. “Every year I’ve gone there I’ve run very, very well. I’ve won the aggregate twice there and would have won the dash there last year but had a late outrider, so it’s exciting.

“That’s my first win of the year, so that’s the biggest one, you’ve got to win at least one [to stay near the top]. I’ve finished second lots, just missed a lot of dashes, so the horses have been running well and just finally everything clicked.”

Fellow Meadow Lake local, DJ King took second place in the show aggregate with a time of 5:03.30, to just edge out Bonnyville’s Danny Ringuette (5:03.37) and Duck Lake’s Luke Tournier (5:03.63) by mere fractions of a second.

Tournier won the Dash for Cash as well as the Fast Time of the Day with a run of 1:13.55.

With the weekend results, Gorst now also leads the driver aggregate for the season, with 1003.5 total points, as the first to hit quadruple digits.

Tournier sits second with 991.5, with Ringuette in third at 976.5, and King fourth at 928.5, 13.5 points up on the next closest driver from the field heading into the next show on the schedule at Little Pine First Nation, Aug. 11-13.
