LET'S GO BEAVERS!

North Battleford Beavers one win away from NSRBL championship

Jul 31, 2023 | 3:28 PM

The North Battleford Beavers are one win away from claiming the North Sask. Rivers Baseball League (NSRBL) title.

After beating the Unity Cardinals 13-3 in Game One of the finals on Sunday, the Beavers have a chance to clinch the championship with a win in Game Two on Tuesday.

Player and Manager Kyle Gregoire said the team is stoked after their opening win but won’t want to celebrate just yet, taking things one inning at a time.

“Last round against Meadow Lake we had a really good couple games there and then last night we played really well defensive-wise and pitching,” he said. “As long as we keep the game simple there and we play our normal Beaver baseball, we should have a really good outcome.”

The Beavers are looking for a big show of redemption after being knocked out of the 2022 playoffs in the semifinals by the eventual champions, the Wilkie Brewers.

The team would not have had the success it did this past season without Gavin Nolan, who was recently named the regular season MVP.

“He had an overall great season,” Gregoire said. “Not surprised, he definitely is a very good pitcher for us and his bat is exceptional so really proud of him getting that kind of award.”

Unfortunately, Nolan suffered a season-ending injury and is not able to hit the field for Game Two but he’s still cheering on the team from the bench.

Regardless of the outcome of Tuesday’s game, the Beavers will be heading to Senior AA Tier 2 Provincials which are taking place the weekend of Aug. 11-13 in Yorkton.

Game Two for the Beavers and a potential championship-clinching moment starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Unity. Game Three, if necessary, is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 9 in North Battleford.
