Battleford sees big success with National Amateur Disc Golf Tour

Jul 19, 2023 | 6:30 AM

The Battlefords Disc Golf Club held their first-ever National Amateur Disc Golf Tour (NADGT) over the weekend in Battleford.

The disc golf action kicked off Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and carried on throughout the day until 4 p.m. when the award winners were presented with gold belts for the Top Male and Top Female, and other winners being given NADGT Champion pins.

The tournament, which is run through the Professional Disc Golf Association, was the first of its kind in the Battlefords, and one vice president of the Battlefords Disc Golf Club, Adam Bolig said it turned out to be a real boon.

“It was our first time ever getting involved with the NADGT and it’s a really good event for some of the smaller clubs,” he said. “It promotes the smaller amateur clubs and really makes it easy so you’re not tying up all your time to organize and run a tournament.”

The Battlefords’ tournament was one of three around the province, with others this summer in Swift Current and Saskatoon as well, the latter of which will be played this coming weekend to cap off the tour in Saskatchewan.

The winners from each of the tournaments, along with the leader in total points accumulated at tournaments through the region will be invited to compete at the 2023 NADGT National Championships Nov. 1-4 in Austin Texas.

The Sask tour runs each year, though generally during the summer the Battlefords Disc Golf Club has held its own tournament known as the ‘Two Town Throwdown’ for those in North Battleford and Battleford.

In order to hold the tour event in Battleford this year, the local disc golf club installed another nine holes to the permanent nine that currently reside on the Battleford course, to showcase the value of a second 18-hole course in the community, in addition to the one at North Battleford’s Centennial Park, which has become a real hit as the sport continues to grow in popularity in the area.

“Disc golf in the Battlefords in general, is growing quite a bit,” Bolig said. “Our Centennial Park course you used to be able to go play it any time and now it’s at the point that just about any evening or weekend it’s group after group, so to allow this new course in Battleford just shows how much disc golf has grown in the Battlefords that we needed another course,” he said.

“This is going to help grow the game even more, to allow other players to be introduced.”
