Terry Blanchette Memorial Golf Tourney a hit for Humane Society

More than 100 golfers came out to participate in the inaugural Terry Blanchette Memorial Golf Tournament, Monday.

The event, which serves as a new fundraiser for the Battlefords Humane Society, was held at the Jackfish Lodge and Conference Centre, kicking off with breakfast at 9 a.m., followed by a shotgun start on the golf course at 11 a.m.

The course featured various games and challenges throughout the day, from the “Fastest Hole in Golf,” to a 10K Hole in One, $2,500 50/50 guarantee, and different hole activities.

Current manager at the Battlefords Humane Society, Chloe Lloyd said it was great to see so many out to take part in the fundraiser in its first year.

“It was fantastic, we had so many members of our community come out and it was a great get-together,” she said. “We always appreciate our community coming out, and lots of people donated to our shelter which is absolutely fantastic, so we’re super grateful for everyone that came out and supported us.”

True to form as the Humane Society fundraiser, the day also featured a number of furry friends who made the trip out to the course to mingle with those in attendance.

“Of course we were there with part of our litter of puppies and a litter of kittens just to kind of visit with everyone which was really good,” Lloyd added with a smile.

Bridges Chevrolet Buick GMC was the title sponsor of the event, with general manager Duane LaFreniere heading up the organization committee for the tournament.

He said they couldn’t have asked for a better day, both in turnout and weather-wise.

“It was a really good turnout which actually exceeded our goal for our first year,” he said. “It was a perfect day, I want to say 22 or 23 degrees yesterday, so it was absolutely ideal that way, and the golf course was in beautiful shape so everything went off without a hitch and it was a really fun day.”

He said the organizing committee will soon begin to meet again in preparation for next year’s event, as the golf tournament looks to become a fixture as a summertime staple for the Humane Society.

“It was just a great day, so we’ll have a meeting soon to start planning next year and I’m hoping we’ll even exceed the 100 golfers we had out this year [moving forward],” he said.
