Stars’ signing Shortall provides offensive spark, 200-foot game

The Battlefords North Stars recently announced the signing of Bailey Shortall for the 2023-24 hockey season.

A 6-foot tall, 174-pound forward from Timberlea, NS., the 17-year-old Shortall spent the 2022-23 season with the Halifax McDonald’s U18 AAA team of the Nova Scotia U18 Hockey League (NSU18MHL).

Serving as team captain, Shortall led the club in scoring with 52 points (21 goals, 31 assists) in 34 games, on his way to being named to the league’s year-end First All-Star Team.

In the playoffs, he then added another 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in seven games.

While the numbers are quick to jump off the page, Shortall describes his own game as that of a 200-foot player who takes pride in his defensive play as well.

“I’m a two-way forward who puts up points offensively and is defensively responsible, who can play up and down the sheet at any position,” he said. “I like to help out the D and then join the rush so my ideal position is centre, but I’m versatile so I can play right or left [wing].”

A good friend of last year’s North Stars’ leading scorer, Kian Bell, Shortall said it didn’t take much convincing to decide on the Battlefords as the right place for himself as well, once he started learning about the team.

“After talking to the Battlefords for the first time I kind of reached out to [Bell] to see what his experiences were out there, and said he loved it,” he said.

“From there, I did my research, and seeing the team did so well this year, and it’s a championship culture really brought my attention to that.”

North Stars’ head scout Wylie Riendeau said Shortall is a player the team is looking forward to adding to the lineup this fall, having kept an eye on his development for a while.

“Bailey’s a guy we’ve been watching over the last couple of years here, and he brings a lot of speed and compete to the lineup,” Riendeau said. “He’s got good size and good speed, and he put up a lot of points over in the Maritimes league there in U18 AAA.

“We’re looking for him to come in and hopefully be able to provide some offence as a first-year guy and some leadership qualities as well [moving forward]. I think he’s got the skill set to do it and we’re really looking forward to adding him to the lineup.”
