Discovery Co-op connecting community with free drive-in movie

The Super Mario brothers are coming to the North Battleford big screen, under the stars.

Discovery Co-op is welcoming the community out to take in the new Super Mario Bros. Movie, Thursday, July 6 from the Discovery Co-op Mall parking lot. The gates will open at 7 p.m., with the movie to begin at 8 p.m.

The gas bar will be open for washroom facilities and snack purchases, with a concession stand also available for purchasing snacks and beverages as well, while the movie itself is free to the public.

VP of Marketing and Community Relations with the Discovery Co-op, Beth Walls said the idea for the drive-in came about pretty naturally after what started as a stand-alone event last year.

“Last year for Discovery Co-op’s 90^th Anniversary we held drive-in movies in all three of the communities we serve, in Raddision, North Battleford, and Glaslyn, and it was such a success in North Battleford that we decided to hold it again,” she said.

“We’re setting up and we’ve got the big screen coming tomorrow, so we’re really looking forward to everyone coming out to the parking lot tomorrow night.”

Heading into its second year now, Walls said should they see another strong turnout, the Co-op would like to make the drive-in an annual event.

“As long as we keep seeing community support for it, we’re hoping to bring it back year after year,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity for the community to come together and enjoy a summer evening in Saskatchewan.”
