Whether they were getting a Canadian-themed tattoo or waving their own mini Canadian flag, people from across the Battlefords area came together to celebrate Canada Day at Centennial Park Saturday.

The City of North Battleford hosted a fun packed event all day – with free hamburgers and hotdogs, cake and live music.

The event also included a decorated bike parade for kids, and also teens and adults, with prizes being handed out to some lucky winners.

The day’s activities also included old fashioned games and teepee teachings.

Later in the evening, fireworks were planned to cap of the festivities.

This is the first time the City of North Battleford held a big Canada Day celebration. Many staff were out manning the barbecues, handing out cake, and making sure everything was in order.

Some people worried it was going to rain leading up to the event, but fortunately that wasn’t an issue as the skies were hot and sunny.

Mayor David Gillan said the City was glad to be able to offer residents a free, fun way to celebrate Canada Day this year.

“It’s really nice to see so many people coming out today for Canada Day,” he said. “We’ve had so many hard years not getting together. The more we come together in events like this, the more we really gel together as a community. It’s a very important part of our council and our strategic plan, for the wellness and wellbeing of our community.”

During his speech Gillan noted in the past three years, due to the COVID situation, it wasn’t possible for the city to put together a big community event like this.

He said City council is proud to host events like this for residents.

“We really believe in community, and the unity that’s in the word community, because unity is really what brings all our community together,” Gillan added. “We can address some of the things in our community that are not so easy to address when we are a more unified and united community. So, I appreciate everybody coming out, because it really shows that together we are better in our community.”
