‘That Hunting Girl’ takes on bear-hunting in Battlefords area

That Hunting Girl TV show star Amanda Lynn Mayhew was in the Battlefords area this week to film a show on bear hunting for her series on the Sportsman Channel.

The outdoors woman spoke at the Cater Lake Wildlife Federation (CLWF) awards banquet in April.

During her recent visit this month Mayhew was invited by CLWF member John Koop to lead a spring bear hunt. Saskatchewan Goose Company provided the accommodations.

Mayhew was accompanied by her son, Brady, and his friend Wade.

“After the [CLWF] dinner, local area teen Meadow Carver reached out to me and told me that she admired what I did, was inspired by it, and kind of wanted to do the same thing,” Mayhew said. “[She said] if there was ever a chance to hunt with me that she would love it.”

So, Mayhew invited her on the trip. While on a video chat with CLWF board director Al Roske, she surprised Meadow by reaching out to her on her birthday, to give her the opportunity to come along for a hunt on June 8.

“That actually happened yesterday, and she got her first bear,” Mayhew said. “I was really proud of her – the way she handled her firearm, the way she handled the situation.”

When reached by battlefordsNOW, Carver said she was thrilled to take part.

“It was the best experience ever,” she said. “I could not have asked for a more amazing, spectacular and kindhearted person to go with.”

All the action was filmed for Mayhew’s TV show- That Hunting Girl.

“We started in Ontario – my son [Brady], myself, and his friend Wade,” Mayhew said. “My son and I took turns driving out here. We filmed all the way through. And into Saskatchewan we made it more of a big deal because this was my first time hunting in this province.”

Bear hunting is permitted in Saskatchewan until the end of the month for licensed hunters.

They embarked on the hunt in the area just north of Glaslyn, with Koop guiding the group.

To be successful in a bear hunt, Mayhew said, hunters need to be patient, try not to move too much, and “try to be able to set yourself up for a good shot.

“You want to make sure you have the best shot possible,” she said. “That it’s ethical. And that you know what you are shooting at. You don’t want to shoot a mom with cubs. So you have to have patience. Don’t shoot the first thing that walks in.”

The group saw a wide variety of bears during their outing.

“Bear hunting is a lot of fun,” Mayhew said. “There is a lot of action, and Saskatchewan is a great place for bear hunting.”

The show is expected to air sometime next year.
