The City of North Battleford is looking forward to holding two community barbecues this summer, as well as a host of festivities for Canada Day.

The first barbecue will take place outside Connaught School, on the 900 block of 107 Street, Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Parks and Recreation Director Cheryl DeNeire said it’s an ideal way for everyone to come out and enjoy the season.

“It’s a great time to get together and celebrate that we’re in summer,” she said.

People are invited to drop by and enjoy a free hot dog and chips along with juice or water.

The Battlefords Humane Society will also attend with some of their pets available for adoption, as well as representatives from the NationsWEST Field House, and the North Battleford Fire Department.

Organizers are also planning some fun games for families to take part in.

The event is also a community safety initiative to encourage people to meet some of their neighbours from the area.

The Battlefords Citizens on Patrol also plan to take part to provide information on their programs, as well as some other local service providers.

This will be the first community barbecue the city has offered since before the pandemic.

“They’re awesome,” DeNeire said. “When I started here in 2018 it was the first time I got to experience a community barbecue. It’s so relaxed, and everyone is able to get to know each other. It was a pleasant experience. I’m really glad we can bring that back, to have people get out and see each other again.”

People are asked to bring their own lawn chair if they hope to sit during the event.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” DeNeire said. “We’re expecting a good amount of people.”

The city’s second community barbecue will be held June 15 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Kinsmen Park Playground. If there’s rain, the event will be postponed.

The city will also have a variety of activities to celebrate Canada Day this year.

A cake-cutting event along with a singing of O Canada is planned for July 1 at Centennial Park in North Battleford. The afternoon will also include live music, a bike parade for the kids, and some old-fashioned family games, like the three-legged race, to take part in.

“If it’s raining, we’ll bring it all inside the Access Communications Centre,” DeNeire said. “There is lots going on.”

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by fireworks in the city during the evening.

The full list of events will be available on the City of North Battleford’s Facebook Page.
