A Taste of Culture brings food, music, people together

No passport is needed to take in A Taste of Culture this weekend in North Battleford.

Taking place Saturday and Sunday (June 10-11) at the Agrivilla and Agriplex at the Battlefords Exhibition Park Fair Grounds (Highway 40 E, North Battleford), the event now in its 12^th year, offers those in attendance a chance to travel the world through their tastebuds with a variety of food trucks and vendors headlining a full mosaic of games, activities, and music to experience.

Executive director Annette McGovern said the event is an opportunity to learn a little bit about other cultures while having a day out with something for the whole family.

“The event is basically to showcase different cultures, and different cultures come in to sell their goods and food and entertain people, just to familiarize other people with where they’re from, what their life was like and actually show similarities between different cultures and create some understanding,” she said.

Over the last decade, A Taste of Culture has quickly established itself as a sign of the spring season in the Battlefords and a community staple as it has continued to grow in involvement and participation in recent years.

That growth was perhaps never more pronounced than when the Battlefords Immigration and Resource Centre had to cancel the event a couple of years ago due to the pandemic.

“When we didn’t hold Taste of Culture for those couple of years people were asking what’s going on and why aren’t we holding it, so now that the restrictions have lapsed [over the last couple of years] and we’ve been able to get back into it, we’ve had a lot of support,” McGovern said.

“Last year [the community involvement] was really good, and this year has been better yet, so we’re hoping there’s a lot of people that come out. I know it’s supposed to be super hot, but it should be nice and cool inside the building and we have a lot of things for the kids to do.”

Among the fun for children will be bouncy castles, clowns, and a balloon man, with the potential to also have pony rides depending on how hot it is.

The event will also feature live musical performances periodically throughout the day, a number of marketplace tables selling goods, and food trucks, in addition to raffles and prizes.

“We’ve got lots of raffles and lots of great prizes with lots of donations from the community,” McGovern said. “We’ve had a great year for community support and we also have a little bit of entertainment coming in, so it’s going to be a good time.”
